Russian media grapple with war narrative amid Kyiv fears

Russian propagandists are beginning to respond anxiously to the lack of progress on the front lines of the war with Ukraine. In one programme, they call for another attack on Kyiv and the capture of the Ukrainian capital within three days, only to later concede that they fear the Ukrainians. Propagandists unanimously assert that "war is Russia's only chance for survival."

Much of the information disseminated by Russian media and government representatives is likely untrue. Such reports may be part of an information war by the Russian Federation.

Propagandists in the Russian media are attempting, in various ways, to justify the complicated situation on the front. For some time, the Russian military has not made the progress anticipated by the Kremlin.

Russia also finds itself in a difficult position as part of the country is occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukraine controls part of the Kursk region. This could serve as leverage in potential negotiations.

For propagandists, this state of affairs presents a significant challenge. Employees of Russian media and their guests are going out of their way to explain the army's situation. Consequently, there are many contradictions in their narrative.

Russian propagandists discuss the army: they cannot decide

On one hand, guests on the Rossiya 1 programme suggest that Kyiv should be attacked and the Ukrainian capital captured within three days. Propagandists claim the army is prepared for this. Conversely, the Russians openly acknowledge their fear of the Ukrainians.

Nevertheless, propagandists agree on one point. According to them, Russia must fight to survive. They falsely accuse the Ukrainian armed forces of "lacking moral restraint" and wanting to kill all Russians.

What should we do? Fight to the end and fulfill SMO objectives. Because there's no other chance of survival. [Ukrainians] have no moral compass. They will kill to the last Russian - Russian propagandists lament.

The video was commented on by Anton Herashchenko, blogger and former deputy head of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs. He emphasises that Ukraine wants Russia and Russians to be held accountable, but aims to do so in accordance with international law.

Ukraine wants, needs and deserves justice and peace. We want Russia and Russians to bear responsibility for their atrocious war crimes - in courts and through the legal system - the Ukrainian politician wrote, posting a video from Russian propaganda television.
