Romanian vote recount ordered amid far‑right candidate's lead
On Thursday, the Romanian Constitutional Court ordered a recount of the votes from the first round of the presidential election. Calin Georgescu, a far-right candidate, took first place.
The Romanian Constitutional Court decided on Thursday that a recount of the votes cast in the first round of the presidential election, held on Sunday, is necessary.
According to the Polish Press Agency, the decision came after considering petitions filed by Cristian Terhes, who sought to annul the election. The Central Election Bureau (BEC) has been ordered to recount the votes and must present its findings to the Constitutional Court. The hearing is scheduled for Friday, 29th November at 1 PM Greenwich Mean Time.
Despite the decision to recount the votes, the Constitutional Court rejected Sebastian-Constantin Popescu's petition to annul the election. It is noteworthy that Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate with far-right views, received the most votes in the first round. Until now, he had been relatively unknown to many. Elena Lasconi, the chair of the centre-right Save Romania Union (USR), came in second place.
The second round of the Romanian presidential election will take place on 8th December. We will see if the recount affects the election results and preparations for further contests. According to PAP, the situation in Romania is being closely monitored, both domestically and internationally.
