Traditionally, we associate the word "citrus" with fruits that have orange or yellow flesh, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. However, in shops, we increasingly encounter citrus fruits with red flesh. These not only offer interesting taste experiences but are also rich in nutrients. It’s advisable to choose them, as they contain a wealth of nutritional ingredients that can support our health.

During winter, opt for citrus fruits

Citrus fruits belong to the rue family and encompass a broad range of fruits, from the familiar lemons, limes, and oranges to less common varieties like calamondin and citrofortunella. Their origins trace back to the citron, a species initially growing in the foothills of the Himalayas. It was later domesticated in India and China and reached Europe thanks to the Roman historian Pliny the Elder.

The citrus fruits we enjoy today are the result of many years of crossbreeding different species, cultivated on farms in warm climates such as China, Brazil, and Spain. Shops are increasingly offering red citrus fruits, which are gaining popularity due to their vibrant colour and distinctive taste.

Eat red citrus fruits for health

Although citrus fruits are known for their sour taste, they are a rich source of nutrients with alkalising properties, which neutralise excess acids in the body. Regularly consuming these fruits can enhance vitality, improve concentration, and strengthen immunity.

Red citrus fruits are notable for their high pectin content, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and reduces "bad" LDL cholesterol, thereby supporting cardiovascular health and detoxification. Furthermore, the abundance of vitamin C in citrus fruits boosts immunity and neutralises free radicals, slowing down the ageing process and preventing several diseases.

Red citrus fruits, such as those from Sicily, contain anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants. Red grapefruit, a hybrid of a pomelo and a Chinese orange, is notable for its lycopene content—a substance that lowers cholesterol and prevents atherosclerosis.

Nutritionists recommend red grapefruit for weight-loss diets due to their low calorie content and low glycaemic index. The fibre in these fruits supports bowel function and regulates digestive processes. The naringin contained in citrus fruits can enhance fat burning. However, this does not mean they should be consumed without restriction. For some, they may cause digestive discomfort, so it is advisable to consume them in moderation, especially during the evening.
