"This year on May 9, the chief [Putin] was clearly wearing concealed body armor during the parade. And that precaution, I think, is necessary," the Kremlin official told the service. Moscow Times notes that some people believe Putin may have started using bulletproof vests during his public appearances last year.
Asked for her opinion, British security consultant Jade Miller confirmed the portal's observations based on footage from the Moscow Victory Parade. In the footage, Putin could be seen moving stiffly and "is observed to keep his overcoat fastened up high and is seen to be checking that it is closed, as though he is trying to ensure no one can see an undergarment," she said.
"Putin always fulfills security demands"
Moscow Times pointed out that security measures are highly stringent during this event: access to Red Square is closed two weeks before 9 May, and guests undergo meticulous personal checks. Moreover, Putin, who laid wreaths, was surrounded by about 20 bodyguards, and dozens of snipers were positioned on the rooftops of neighbouring buildings.
Andrei Soldatov, an expert specializing in Russian services' activities, told the portal that Putin usually agrees to raise the level of security if advised by his protection.
"Putin is a rather unique leader in that he usually agrees to increased security/expansion of the security perimeter when his guards ask for it," he said.
