Videos from the scene surfaced online almost instantly, depicting armed, masked individuals systematically and coldly opening fire on unarmed civilians.
On Saturday, the Russian Federation's Investigative Committee announced that the death toll from the attack had reached 115 and might still rise. Gunshot wounds, along with carbon monoxide poisoning due to the fire, were reported as the leading causes of death.
The attackers, numbering at least four (though there were suspicions of as many as 20), fled the scene. Early on Saturday, unofficial reports about the apprehension of the first suspects emerged.
