Porsche ditches manual for speed in new Carrera S revamp
Porsche enters the new year with another version of the Carrera S, providing the perfect balance for those who seek an ideal blend of comfort and performance. Unfortunately, the Germans have abandoned one element cherished by purists.
We're referring to the manual transmission, which has been entirely removed from the offering. Customers now have the automatic 8-speed PDK transmission, which, alongside the three-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine, enables the car to reach 97 km/h in 3.3 seconds and accelerate up to 307 km/h.
The Carrera S has never been this swift. This is largely thanks to an additional power boost of 30 horsepower - the engine now produces 480 hp and 530 Nm. This enhancement was achieved through the use of more efficient turbochargers and intercoolers. The exhaust system has also been redesigned. Notably, the new Carrera S excels not only in straight lines. Porsche has incorporated features known from its higher versions.
This includes the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) system and efficient brakes with discs measuring 406 mm at the front and 381 mm at the rear, larger than those in the previous GTS. If desired, you can also upgrade to the adaptive PASM suspension with a rear-wheel steering system or ceramic brakes.
As for the interior and exterior design, the changes are as subtle as in other variants of the new 911. Purists, much like missing the manual transmission, might be slightly displeased by the fully digital gauges and the replacement of the key with a start button. Nevertheless, it remains that the new Carrera S is spectacular. We should learn how it performs on the road in the coming months.
