Pope Francis wishes to be buried in the same manner as any other Christian—with dignity but without any special distinction. Hence, during his funeral, his body will not be placed on a catafalque but rather laid in a coffin. In an interview for the book Successor, Francis revealed that he intends to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Once again, Pope Francis demonstrates his preference for a more modest pontificate. He shared his final wishes with Spanish Vatican correspondent Javier Martinez-Brocal.

Francis made it clear that he desires only a single vigil following his death rather than two, and he has opted out of having a separate ceremony for the closing of his coffin.

His decision to have his body laid in a coffin rather than on a catafalque illustrates his wish for a farewell that is dignified yet reflective of any ordinary Christian's funeral.

"I spoke with the master of ceremonies, and we decided to forgo this along with several other customs," Francis revealed.

Pope Francis desires to rest in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. This location holds a unique significance for him; it's a sanctuary he frequently visited before pivotal events, international journeys, and upon returning from them, as well as the hospital. It has been a cornerstone of his prayer life, even before his papacy.

Disturbing reports have surfaced from the Vatican. On Good Friday, Pope Francis was notably absent from the traditional Way of the Cross event at the Roman Colosseum, opting instead to remain within the Vatican. This decision was reportedly taken to prioritize "health maintenance." However, he did participate in the Service of the Lord's Passion held in St. Peter's Basilica that day.

On Palm Sunday, concerns were raised when Francis's voice was exceptionally weak, compelling him to abstain from delivering the sermon. Nonetheless, his physician has assured that while the Pope experiences moments of exhaustion, he remains in good health for someone his age.
