Pope criticises Trump over harsh immigration deportations
Pope Francis, in a letter to the bishops of the United States, criticised President Donald Trump's immigration policy regarding the mass deportation of illegal immigrants. The Pope emphasised that this cannot be accepted.
Pope Francis directed a letter to the bishops of the United States, in which he sharply criticised President Donald Trump's immigration approach.
In his message, announced on Tuesday, Francis noted that "the rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality." The Pope emphasised that deportations violate the dignity of many people who often leave their countries due to extreme poverty, lack of security, or persecution.
Pope recognises "right to defence"
At the same time, Pope Francis acknowledged the nation's right to defend itself and protect the community from individuals who have committed violence or serious crimes.
He emphasised that the deportation of people who, in many cases, have left their homeland due to extreme poverty, lack of security, exploitation, persecution, or serious environmental destruction violates the dignity of many men and women as well as entire families, placing them in a situation of particular vulnerability.
