A dramatic situation has unfolded in Nepal. An avalanche swept down from a steep slope has pushed two overcrowded buses into the river. Dozens of people are feared dead.
Sixty-six people have been reported missing, and it is feared that all of them may already be deceased. The rescue operation is being hindered by continuous monsoon rain, and avalanches block the road, leading to disaster sites in several places.
The avalanche came suddenly
The head of the local administration, Khima Nanada Bhusai, informed the media that the disaster occurred on Friday, 12th July, at around 9 PM GMT. The avalanche came suddenly and pushed the buses into the river.
It is known that 24 people were travelling on one of the buses and 42 on the other. However, these numbers do not include people who may have boarded later, as it is certain that the buses were overcrowded.
Monsoon season
The monsoon season in this part of the world begins in June and lasts until September. In Nepal, it causes prolonged and heavy rain. Due to the country's mountainous terrain, avalanches are expected.
At the beginning of July, the media reported several victims and missing people in Nepal as a result of floods and landslides caused by heavy rains.
