Navigating new waters: Russia and Indonesia launch first naval drill

The naval forces of Russia and Indonesia have commenced the joint exercise Orruda 2024 in the city of Surabaya. This marks the inaugural event of its kind in the history of both nations and exemplifies the strengthening of relations. However, Jakarta still does not officially support either side in the Ukraine conflict.

The manoeuvres started on 4th November and will last four days. These are the first bilateral naval exercises between the two countries since Indonesia gained independence 79 years ago.

The command of the Indonesian navy and Russian Rear Admiral Aleksey Sysuyev attended the opening ceremony. The military personnel exchanged gifts— the Russians received hats with Indonesian navy symbols and commemorative coins. At the same time, representatives from the Pacific Fleet presented their counterparts with souvenirs related to the history of the Russian navy and chocolates.

"Military cooperation is a natural part of our interstate relations. I am particularly pleased to note that we have very deep and sincere relations between the Indonesian and Russian navies, and the maritime exercises currently being organized in Surabaya and the Java Sea will be a good confirmation of the strong friendship between our nations," stated the Russian ambassador to Indonesia, Sergey Tolchenov.

Russia dispatched two corvettes, a tanker, a helicopter, and a tugboat to the manoeuvres. Meanwhile, according to unofficial sources, the Indonesian fleet comprises four submarines, seven frigates, 24 corvettes, 24 missile boats, and approximately 160 patrol boats.

Indonesia and Russia strengthen relations

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, remains committed to its non-alignment strategy despite pressure from the West, which seeks Jakarta's support on issues related to conflicts in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine.

Nevertheless, Prabowo Dubianto, the President of Indonesia, elected in February, openly expresses his desire to deepen his country's alliances and ensure a more significant role on the international stage. In July, he visited Moscow and met with Vladimir Putin.
