In their response, Kremlin officials stated that the release of the mobilized "is possible in accordance with current legislation, as well as after the cessation of circumstances that constituted the basis for the call-up of citizens for military service".

According to Vishnevsky, this refers to Decree No. 647 by President Vladimir Putin (regarding the partial mobilization) from 21 September 2022, which remains in effect.

They will fight until Putin decides otherwise

The Russian Ministry of Defence previously declined to set the service period of the mobilized at one year. The ministry mentioned that the reservists drafted for the war would be returned home as soon as the president enacted a decree to conclude mobilization, and the timing for this decision rests solely on "the achievement of the objectives of the Special Operation", according to Putin. Other solutions, including unit rotation, were deemed "impractical".

- "This signifies that the mobilized will continue their service at the front. This means that the appeals of their wives will go unheard. Those convicted and signing a contract receive a pardon and return home after six months. Those drafted under 'partial mobilization' are obliged to continue their service," Vishnevsky explained.

Partial mobilization in Russia

The mobilization took place from 21 September to 28 October 2022. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that 302,503 individuals were conscripted, and 281 military units and sub-units were organized during this period. The average age of the reservists was 35. Over half of those drafted were married, and 56.3 percent had children.
