Professional cyclists must train on public roads, which involves high risk. Andrey Amador found this out the hard way. The Costa Rican was very fortunate to have survived.

It was meant to be a routine training session. Like every professional cyclist, Andrey Amador must fine-tune his performance on public roads. He mainly cycles around Barcelona. This was the situation last Friday (May 10). However, this time, the Costa Rican was exceptionally unlucky.

The news of Amador’s serious accident has circulated across global media. The interest is understandable, given that a picture of the Costa Rican cyclist’s bike was shared online. The state of Andrey’s equipment is horrifying.

It's a miracle he's alive

Catalunya Radio reports that Amador had an accident near his home. The 37-year-old was hit by a truck. For now, that’s all the information available, and the Catalan police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The Costa Rican’s bike is completely wrecked. This suggests that the collision was not minor. Furthermore, Andrey was taken to the hospital with numerous injuries. Most importantly, though, he is alive, and his condition is stable.

Amador suffered several fractures. According to unofficial sources, one leg was particularly badly injured, in which he broke the tibia and fibula, and also suffered foot damage.

“Besides, his health condition is not serious,” explains Catalunya Radio.

The cyclist is currently in the hospital. It’s confirmed that he has had one surgery. He will have to put cycling on hold for a considerable time. It has not been disclosed who was at fault in the incident or what happened to the truck driver.

Andrey Amador hails from Costa Rica. He has represented his country at the Olympic Games three times. He has been competing in prestigious cycling contests throughout the world for years. Recently, he was part of the American team EF Education-Easy Post, but he did not participate in its lineup for the renowned Giro d'Italia series.

The 37-year-old’s achievements include a bronze medal in the team time trial at the World Championships. He has won stages at the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana.
