Mel Gibson's resurgence was marred by controversial remarks
Oscar-winning actor and director, womaniser, and accused anti-Semite Mel Gibson's life is a vivid example of the great success and spectacular downfall of a Hollywood star. In recent years, it appeared that Gibson had regained a balanced persona, but he has revealed his darker side once more.
For more than a quarter of a century, Mel Gibson was regarded as an exemplary husband and father. By his side was his wife, Robyn Denise Moore, whom he married in 1980, before his rise to fame. Unfortunately, their marriage was not as ideal as it seemed. Gibson struggled significantly with alcohol addiction. Robyn decided to separate in 2006 after the actor was arrested for drink-driving in Malibu.
Three years later, Mel Gibson's wife filed for divorce when the world learned of his affair with Oksana Grigorieva, who was 14 years his junior. This relationship with the Russian pianist and singer ended in a significant scandal when she released recordings in which the star threatened her, insulted her, and committed abuse. A media storm ensued, effectively excluding Gibson from Hollywood circles for many years.
In recent years, Mel Gibson has settled down; he acts regularly but does not feature in prominent Hollywood productions. He directed a critically acclaimed film, "Hacksaw Ridge," and his next film, "Flight Risk," is expected to premiere in cinemas in January. He has also contemplated creating a sequel to "The Passion." However, a recent comment directed at United States presidential candidate Kamala Harris has again tarnished his image.
When asked by a reporter from the American portal "TMZ" whether he would vote for Donald Trump in the upcoming elections, Mel Gibson replied: "I don’t think it’s going to surprise anyone who I’ll vote for. I know what it’ll be like if we let her in and that ain’t good. Miserable track record – appalling track record. No policies to speak of. And she’s got the IQ of a fence post."
This comment once again landed the actor in trouble. The American media was rife with criticism. It's not so much about who Gibson plans to vote for or the fact that Hollywood Trump supporters are a minority. The issue lies in the star using an insult reminiscent of Trump's campaign tactics, where he often derides opponents' intelligence, criticisms that echo even among Republican Party supporters.
