Mallorca's new tourism tax: Doubling fees to curb crowds

The fight against excessive tourism continues. When visiting Mallorca, we will have to pay even more. The island authorities are introducing a new charge. The "sustainable tourism" fee will also be increased.

The Balearic authorities are not slowing down in their fight against excessive tourism. The "sustainable tourism tax" is expected to rise soon.

Additionally, up to £8 per night in a hotel

The official amount has not yet been set, but the current rate may even be doubled. If this happens, the additional fee for each night in a five-star hotel would be not €4 but €8 (about £7), and in a four-star hotel, it would be €4 (about £3) instead of the current €2.

The increase will apply only during the peak season, from June to August. In the other months, the tourist tax will be lower to encourage visits outside the holiday season. The authorities are especially keen on boosting tourist traffic between December and February.

- The tax allows us to balance the impact of mass tourism on Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, or Formentera - explains Marga Prohens, quoted by the Majorca Daily Bulletin. – Since hotels can raise prices, there is room to also raise the tax – she added.

Hotel owners on Ibiza and Formentera did not support the tax increase decision.- The dissatisfaction of hoteliers is widespread in all Balearic organisations. Such a tax increase is absurd, and its justification does not reflect reality. There won't be more tourists in winter and fewer tourists in summer," said Ana Gordillo, representing the industry.

Car rental tax

The authorities of Mallorca also plan to introduce a car rental tax. The fee will range from €2 to €7 depending on the number of kilometres driven. Longer journeys will cost tourists more. The money from this tax is intended for the development of public transport.
