Although, in many cases, the development of cancer is caused by genetic factors that we cannot influence, many modifiable factors can either decrease or increase the risk of cancer. The American Cancer Society highlights several vital steps that are worth taking for proper prevention.

It's worth examining our eating habits. Specialists recommend completely eliminating highly processed foods and those rich in sugar, salt, and trans fats from our diet. Consuming large amounts of alcohol is also very harmful. Alcohol consumption should be significantly limited because regular drinking increases the risk of liver, intestinal, throat, mouth, oesophagus, larynx, and breast cancer in women.

Too much red meat also negatively impacts health. Experts have long warned that highly developed societies consume too much of it, leading to an increase in cancer cases. However, specialists point out what can reduce the chances of cancer appearing. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and olive oil, which contains valuable antioxidants and fatty acids, can help reduce the risk.

We should also take care of our well-being, as stress can influence the formation of cancer cells. Dr Amy Lee from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center emphasizes that controlling emotions and accepting difficult situations can help us deal with problems more quickly and effectively. Mental balance is, therefore, essential in this aspect.

Stress weakens the immune system, making it more susceptible to the development of cancer cells. It's worth incorporating a moment of physical activity into the daily schedule, such as a walk outdoors, a workout, meditation, or yoga. Even a few minutes outside can significantly improve our well-being.

Cancer prevention must not forget about regular check-ups and vaccinations. Importantly, they should be performed with appropriate regularity. It is also crucial to completely quit smoking.

An important element of cancer prevention is weight control. Living with overweight or obesity significantly increases cancer risk. Also, avoid excessive sun exposure.
