Lavrov and Rubio: New teams to tackle Ukraine conflict
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have agreed to form teams to work towards a swift resolution of the war in Ukraine. Europe will have a place at the negotiating table.
Tuesday's talks between the Russian and American delegations in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, lasted over four hours and were the first since Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
At a press conference following the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the only leader in the world who can initiate the negotiation process and bring an end to the conflict is Donald Trump.
"Rubio says ending Russia's war in Ukraine will require concessions from all sides and that Europe will be part of talks," reports AP. He suggested that it would be necessary to lift sanctions against Russia and pointed to the European Union, which must have a place at the negotiating table in such a case.
He stated that the European Union must have a seat at the negotiation table because they have also implemented their sanctions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed to cooperate on issues of mutual geopolitical interest, US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce announced on Tuesday after the delegation talks between the two countries in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh.
