A landslide has occurred on the island of Terceira, part of the Azores archipelago, near the town of Raminho. According to local authorities, this event is connected to the seismic activity of the Santa Barbara volcano. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported.

Seismic activity on Terceira

Since the end of 2022, Terceira has experienced increased seismic activity. Portuguese seismologists regularly report tremors associated with the Santa Barbara volcano. The strongest tremor reached a magnitude of 4.5 and was felt even at the American military base in the municipality of Lajes.

In December 2024, the Institute of Volcanology of the University of the Azores lowered the Santa Barbara volcano alert level to V2, indicating a potential reactivation of the volcanic system. Nevertheless, island residents remain vigilant for any changes in seismic activity.

Safety of residents

Despite the landslide, no severe damage or threats to residents have been reported. Local authorities are monitoring the situation and are in constant contact with experts to ensure the safety of Terceira's residents.

The events on Terceira remind us of nature's unpredictability and the necessity of continuously monitoring seismic activity in volcanic regions. Authorities urge caution and advise following announcements regarding the situation on the island.
