KLM emergency landing ends safely after runway skid in Norway
There were moments of terror at Sandefjord-Torp Airport in Norway when a KLM Dutch Airlines plane veered off the runway during an emergency landing. A recording of the incident has appeared online.
The KLM Boeing 737-8K2 was forced to make an emergency landing at Oslo Airport, after which it skidded off the runway and came to rest on the grass. The incident was caused by a hydraulic system failure. It occurred on 28 December, shortly after takeoff, as the plane was en route to Amsterdam.
The airport was closed until further notice. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Plane crash in South Korea
It is worth recalling that a day later, on 29 December, a plane crash occurred at Muan Airport in southwestern South Korea.
South Korea’s Ministry of Transport described the crash as the most tragic aviation accident involving South Korean airlines in nearly thirty years. There were 181 people on board, of whom two, as reported by Reuters, were Thai citizens, while the rest were South Korean. Airport services stated they were able to rescue two people.
The head of Muan Fire Department, Lee Jung-hyun, said that investigators are analysing potential causes of the crash, including the involvement of birds and weather conditions. The Yonhap agency cited information from the airport, suggesting that a bird strike might have led to the failure of the landing gear.
South Korean media also reported a message sent by one of the passengers to a relative, in which they mentioned a bird being lodged in the plane’s wing.
