It's widely believed that breakfast is the most essential meal. Many of us kick off our morning with crispy toast topped with jam, peanut butter, or cheese. These options might seem tasty and convenient, but are they good for us? The popular choice of toast might not be so beneficial for our health after all.

Breakfast is critical when our bodies need energy to begin the day's activities. However, not all our food selections are good for our health. An expert has pointed out that a common breakfast ingredient could be as harmful as breathing in car exhaust fumes.

Why is toast considered unhealthy?

Research by the University of Austin in Texas has shown that toasting bread until golden brown creates numerous harmful substances. During the toasting process, the level of fine particulate matter in the air can rise to around 1-1.3 milligrams per cubic metre, much higher than the World Health Organization's recommended limit of about 0.1 milligrams.

According to the researchers, consuming heavily toasted bread introduces more toxins into the body than in car exhaust!

Health on your plate - time to ditch the toast!

Daniel Herman, a British nutrition expert, also cautions against having toast for breakfast. In an interview with Express, he highlighted that toast is one of the least healthy components of the morning meal.

He explains that toasting bread, aside from giving it an enticing look and satisfying crunch, strips it of its nutritional value. Moreover, spreading it with butter or margarine turns it into a calorie bomb, contributing to weight gain.

Healthy alternatives to toast

Rather than opting for toast, Herman suggests eating whole-grain bread as is. It boasts significantly more fibre and nutrients than white bread and pairs excellently with avocado, which is a source of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.

He also mentions that consuming fried foods, including bread, heightens the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and other chronic conditions. Frying bread leads to a reduction in its nutrient content under the influence of high temperatures and fat.

Opt for health with whole grain bread!

Remember that breakfast is a crucial meal that should supply your body with energy and vital nutrients. Instead of settling for potentially harmful toast, choose healthier alternatives like whole-grain bread and add avocado, fruit, or eggs. Your body will definitely thank you for it!
