The attack occurred on Friday evening, 11 October, in Ingushetia, a republic within the Russian Federation in the North Caucasus. The perpetrators targeted the car in which the deputy head of the unit fighting extremism was travelling. Reports indicate that three people, including a policeman, were killed, and the attackers fled the scene.
"According to the media, they fled the scene of the attack and headed towards the neighbouring Russian republic of North Ossetia," Reuters reported early on Saturday morning. An intensive investigation is currently underway, with authorities actively searching for the suspects.
The Russian centre for combating extremism, which operates under the jurisdiction of the local Ministry of Internal Affairs, has previously faced criticism for harsh actions against opposition members and social activists. In 2019, an assassination attempt on the then head of these structures in Ingushetia, Ibragim Eldzharkiyev, received significant attention after he was shot in Moscow. His predecessor, Timur Chamkhoyev, was also embroiled in controversy, having been accused of using torture and subsequently arrested.
In Ingushetia, incidents of violence and attacks linked to extremist activity occur frequently. The latest events have once again highlighted these tensions, and the case is attracting considerable interest from both local and international media.
