Jazz and jeans: Kremlin's bizarre blame for United States' downfall
In a Russian television programme, one of the women stated, "If you dance jazz today, tomorrow you will sell your country" — this exemplifies how Kremlin propaganda operates today. She also argued that the downfall of the USA was caused by jazz and, among other things, tight jeans, stressing that these aspects are "the path to LGBT."
Much of the information disseminated by Russian media and government representatives is likely to be untrue. Such reports may be part of an information war by the Russian Federation.
In a Russian television programme, a certain Russian woman delivered a controversial speech, claiming that the United States's downfall occurred due to jazz and tight jeans. In her opinion, these cultural elements represent "the path to LGBT."
It is worth noting that in Russia, there is strong intolerance towards non-heteronormative individuals, which manifests itself at various levels of society. Conversely, the United States is a country where same-sex couples can get married.
"I absolutely agree that if you dance jazz today, by the way, I think it's hobo music, then tomorrow you will sell your country. That's a fraction of the truth, much more than a fraction of a joke. The beginning of the downfall of this great country occurred because of these phenomena, because of jazz, because of 'stilagi', and so on. What are 'stilagi', what are tight jeans? This is, excuse me, the path to LGBT," the woman said, expressing her extreme views on Western culture.
It is worth adding that 'stilagi' was the first youth subculture in the USSR, appearing at the end of the 1940s and existing until the 1960s. It was apolitical but was characterised by an interest in Western culture, which led to harassment by the authorities in Russia.
