We use towels every day, so washing them properly is vital. Regularly washing towels at the correct temperature helps eliminate bacteria and microorganisms that can accumulate on the fabric. Moreover, washing at too low a temperature can lead to colour loss and the retention of unpleasant odours. So, in what setting should you wash towels?

At what temperature should you wash towels?

Recommendations for washing towels may vary depending on colour and material. White towels are best washed at 60 degrees Celsius, ensuring hygiene and maintaining the fabric's whiteness. For coloured towels, the recommended temperature is 40-60 degrees Celsius to preserve their vibrant colours. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations on the towel's tag, as some materials may require lower temperatures to prevent damage. It is also important to avoid fabric softeners, which can make towels rough and less absorbent. Instead, you can use glycerine. Adding three tablespoons of glycerine to the washing machine during the wash cycle will make the towels soft and fragrant.

Choosing the right detergent is key to effectively washing towels. Special laundry liquids with added silver ions, which have disinfecting properties, are available and recommended for washing towels and bed linens. These detergents are particularly effective at lower temperatures, which is a good option for delicate materials. There are also many natural methods to maintain the softness and freshness of towels. If there are stubborn stains on the towels, it is worth soaking them overnight in a solution of about 3 litres of water and 30 millilitres of glycerine.

Common mistakes when washing towels

One of the most common mistakes is washing towels at too low a temperature, which doesn't eliminate all microorganisms and bacteria. To ensure towels are truly clean, wash them at a temperature of at least 60 degrees Celsius.

Another mistake is frequently using fabric softeners, which make towels rough and less absorbent.

Another common mistake is overloading the washing machine. Towels should have enough space to move freely, allowing for better washing and rinsing. If the washing machine is packed too tightly, towels won't be cleaned well and may retain unpleasant odours.

Did you know that..

Table salt can significantly improve the condition of your towels. Adding a tablespoon of salt to the wash makes the material soft. Salt removes unpleasant odours and refreshes colours, making your towels look new.
