Although trendy in bars and fast food outlets, there's no need to spend a fortune to enjoy them. Homemade onion rings are simple to prepare, and their taste surpasses store-bought versions.

Onion rings are a real hit for any party or movie night. Their crispy coating and delicate onion flavour make them beloved by many. If you have mainly associated them with fast food menus until now, it's time to change that! Here's a recipe that will allow you to prepare onion rings in the comfort of your home. They are easy to make and much tastier than the store-bought ones.

Recipe for perfect onion rings

To prepare delicious and crispy onion rings, you only need a few simple ingredients:

                  
  • 2 large onions
  • 240 ml (1 cup) of flour
  • 240 ml (1 cup) of breadcrumbs
  • 240 ml (1 cup) of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Preparation:

  1. Peel the onions and cut them into slices about 1 cm thick. Separate the slices into individual rings.
  2. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  3. In a second bowl, beat the eggs and add the milk.
  4. Dip each onion ring first in the flour, then in the egg and milk mixture, and finally in the breadcrumbs, thoroughly coating it on all sides.
  5. Heat the oil in a deep skillet or deep fryer to about 175°C.
  6. Fry the onion rings until golden, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  7. Drain them on a paper towel and sprinkle with sea salt.

Additional tips:

  • You can double-coat them in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs for even crispier onion rings.
  • Add your favourite herbs and spices to the coating, such as sweet paprika, oregano, or granulated garlic.
  • You can also bake the onion rings in the oven. Preheat the oven to 200°C, place the onion rings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for about 15-20 minutes until golden and crispy.
