Health risks of thongs: hygiene expert highlights dangers in everyday underwear choice
"Avoid wearing them daily," hygiene specialist, Mary Futher, advises in a video published on TikTok. Her words are affirmed by medical professionals.
Are these in your drawer? It's better to let them go
You can find them in any lingerie department. Women often frequent these pairs since they are untraceable under clothing. Regrettably, the consistent wearing of thongs causes more harm than good.
Going by the pseudonym Madame Sweat, Mary Futher elucidates to her TikTok followers how harmful such exposing underwear can be. The hygiene expert points out three dangers.
"Firstly, thongs can incite a urinary tract infection due to the carriage of E. coli bacteria by the material. Secondly, they can provoke infections by irritating the vaginal area. Lastly, there could be pigmentation issues due to chafing," details Mary Futher.
Dr. Shirin Lakhani confirms these concerns to "The Independent," pointing out the possibility of chafing, irritation, and bacterial transfer.
"While most bacteria are harmless, some can trigger urinary tract irritations and infections over time," the doctor accentuates.
Are thongs all bad? A gynaecologist elaborates
Agnieszka Nalewczyńska, a gynaecologist who delved into the topic of thongs on her Instagram, certainly agrees with the above sentiment.
"Why should we avoid thongs? Consider the anal and rectal area. What do they house? Bacteria. In the presence of such a thin strip of material, we sweat, which is normal, and the bacteria travel upwards on this strip to the vaginal and urethral area as if on a highway," the expert vividly illustrates.
