Harvey Weinstein's new trial looms amid cancer battle
Harvey Weinstein was once considered one of Hollywood's top film producers. After the revelation of his sexual abuses, his reputation crumbled. It has now emerged that the 72-year-old also has health problems.
A source close to the producer told CNN that Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone cancer.
Harvey Weinstein is suffering from cancer
The filmmaker, beset by accusations, is reportedly undergoing treatment at Rikers Island prison in New York. These reports about Weinstein's health were initially announced by NBC News.
In a recent statement, Harvey Weinstein's spokesman, Juda Engelmayer, expressed concern over the disclosure of Weinstein's private health information, noting he is battling chronic myeloid leukaemia. Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein's prison consultant and authorised legal representative for healthcare matters in New York State, echoed this sentiment.
It is both disturbing and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discussion. Out of respect for Mr Weinstein's privacy, we will not be making further comments, Rothfeld said in a statement to CNN.
Harvey Weinstein faces legal and health problems
The 72-year-old is also grappling with other health issues. He recently underwent emergency heart surgery, during which - according to his lawyer, Arthur Aidala - he nearly died. In addition to heart problems, Weinstein suffers from diabetes.
The former producer, who is facing allegations, has been attending court for several years with the aid of a walker. Harvey Weinstein steadfastly maintains his innocence. Furthermore, the Court of Appeals in New York overturned the 2020 conviction, citing procedural errors. The court ruled that the testimonies of three accusers, not directly related to the charges, should not have been considered. Consequently, Weinstein is awaiting a new trial, scheduled to commence in early 2025.
