Google Maps now displays 3D buildings to Android Auto users: an update or clutter?
The website 9to5Google first reported introducing 3D buildings to Google Maps in Android Auto. According to their observations, the default setting is for 3D buildings on the map to be activated. However, should you wish to, you can opt-out by visiting the Google Maps settings in the car. The Android Auto map function's 3D buildings can assist with orientation in unfamiliar cities with numerous unique buildings. This undoubtedly provides an additional reference point on a GPS navigation screen.

As the 9to5Google website points out, there is no direct correlation between the appearance of 3D buildings on the map and the recently released Android Auto 11.2 update. However, this new feature may be restricted to the most recent OS pairing combined with an updated Google Maps app. Hence, it is worth checking if your phone is operating the latest software versions as these could be key to accessing this new function, even if it is only server-side activated.
The 3D buildings on the map are minor, meaning they don't seem to 'cover-up' other streets or interfere with navigation. However, some initial users' feedback suggests that the buildings can create clutter on the screen and do not aid in easy reading of route information when quickly scanning the navigation screen.
Considering that Google Maps has recently updated its interface and colour scheme, all these changes combined could be causing some confusion among drivers familiar with the previous map version. Fortunately, the 3D buildings can be deactivated in the options. However, some users suggest that the choice is inconvenient as it requires toggling for every planned route.
The 9to5Google website also points out that 3D buildings are only visible using a light map theme. When the colours are switched to dark, for example, when the vehicle’s headlights are turned on, the 3D buildings are not displayed. In previous stages of testing, however, the feature behaved differently, displaying 3D buildings on Android Auto at all times, regardless of the theme chosen in Google Maps.
