For instance, the mysterious cameras can be found on the German A12 motorway.

They are not devices for checking road tolls. They are police devices - explained Dr Kamila Matthies.

The German lawyer admitted that she did not know the purpose of such cameras until she had a relevant case in court.

I represented a young man who travelled to Germany to buy cars. They showed me where he had driven on that motorway - explained the lawyer.

Germany: What are the "boxes" above the motorway for?

Kamila Matthies revealed that these devices scan drivers' number plates and compare them in the system to determine if a given car is listed for surveillance or search. If so, then everything comes to light, she added.

These devices are meant to prevent crime. Are they allowed? Here, there is a big discussion. There is data protection after all. Can they be recorded? Supposedly not, they can only be scanned and compared, and only later, if something comes up, forwarded. Generally, however, it remains a great unknown - concluded the lawyer.
