German Green Party leaders resign amid sharp electoral decline
The German Green Party faces significant changes. Its leaders, Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang, announced on Wednesday that they are stepping down from their positions due to a series of painful electoral defeats for the Greens.

Nouripour and Lang will lead the party until November. A convention scheduled for that month is expected to elect new party leadership. In Germany, the Greens are part of the governing coalition.
Meanwhile, this party's candidates in this year's local elections, which took place in eastern Germany, failed to enter the parliaments of Brandenburg and Thuringia, and in Saxony, they just barely surpassed the five percent threshold.
This is a significant drop in support compared to results from previous years. Previously, as the DPA agency reminds us, the Greens co-governed in these federal states.
German party in retreat. Enormous drop in support
It is also notably worse nationwide. In the June elections to the European Parliament, the Greens received 11.9 percent support across Germany, whereas in the 2019 European elections, they received over 20 percent support.
Voters are also turning away from this party in nationwide polls in Germany. For the first time in years, surveys give the Greens less than 10 percent support.
