From thirst to danger: Recognizing dehydration's hidden signals
Dehydration is a threat throughout the year, not just in the summer heat. That's why if you're experiencing any of the ailments described below, it's vital to ensure you're properly hydrated. We have several ways to achieve this.
Kidney failure, brain swelling, severe fatigue, heat stroke, and even death can all result from dehydration. This is particularly dangerous during hot weather, but it should not be underestimated at other times. However, before such severe conditions occur, our body sends us certain warning signals, indicating the need to assess our water balance quickly.
Symptoms of dehydration
The signs of insufficient fluids in the body include several specific symptoms. The first, of course, is an increased feeling of thirst. However, this can be misleading as many become desensitized to this symptom, considering it normal and entirely harmless.
Other signs of dehydration are dry and rough skin, headaches and dizziness, and tiredness and weakness. In children, irritability and a lack of concentration are particularly noticeable. Ignoring proper hydration can lead to memory and concentration problems and general irritability.
A drink that hydrates better than water
During hot weather, scientists recommend drinking plenty of water and adding a small amount of salt to it. This special drink ensures we replenish not just fluids but also sodium, which we lose through sweat, among other things. However, even when we're not facing high temperatures outside, it's good to know about drinks that hydrate effectively and taste pleasant.
The first of these remarkable drinks is milk. Skimmed milk, in particular, is the most efficient at hydrating. This is due to the presence of proteins, fats, sodium, and potassium in milk.
Other frequently mentioned drinks by scientists include: coffee, green tea, orange juice, and isotonic drinks. Each of these fluids not only hydrates but also improves brain function, reduces the risk of heat stroke, and most importantly — thoroughly hydrates the body's cells.
