Putin vows to strengthen ties with North Korea amid global tension

In a message, Russian President Vladimir Putin assured North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that both countries would continue to uphold the strategic partnership treaty. Putin also expressed confidence that Moscow and Pyongyang would further intensify their "efforts to combat modern threats and challenges," according to the KCNA agency.

According to the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA), in a New Year's message to North Korean Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted that cooperation with Pyongyang aligns with the fundamental interests of the nations of both countries.

According to the agency, the congratulatory letter was sent on 17 December. Putin emphasised that the June summit between Russia and North Korea elevated Russian-Korean relations to a new qualitative level. The agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership has created conditions for the fundamental expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation in all important areas," KCNA quoted the content of the congratulatory message as saying.

A new stage of cooperation

"I am convinced that in the upcoming year, 2025, we will continue close cooperation in implementing this historic agreement, further aligning our efforts in combating contemporary threats and challenges," stated the letter. "This undoubtedly corresponds to the key interests of the nations of Russia and North Korea," it was added in the message.

Putin wished Kim Jong Un and his family health and happiness, and extended wishes of prosperity to the citizens of North Korea.

Strategic partnership treaty

The Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and North Korea, signed on 19 June during Putin's visit to Pyongyang, came into force on 4 December. The treaty's preamble addresses the key interests of the nations of Russia and North Korea and contributes to ensuring peace, security, and regional and global stability.

According to the document, the parties are committed to permanently supporting and developing relations of general strategic partnership, taking into account their state laws and international obligations, based on the principles of mutual respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, equality, and other principles of international law concerning friendly relations and cooperation between states.
