Bacon from banana peels – a healthy and tasty alternative

Vegan bacon from banana peels is a delicious alternative to its meat counterpart. It surprises with its crunchiness, slight fatness, and smoky aroma while remaining thin and delicate. Moreover, the subtle hint of banana is not overwhelming, making the prepared bacon pair well with many dishes.

Why make "bacon" from banana peels?

  • Zero waste: It's an excellent way to use produce that usually ends up in the bin.
  • Taste: "Banana bacon" has a unique, sweet-salty flavour with a smoky hint. It is crispy and slightly fatty.
  • Health: Banana peels are rich in fibre and antioxidants, which benefit our health.
  • Vegan version: It's a great alternative to traditional bacon for vegans and vegetarians.

How to prepare bacon from banana peels?

Preparing bacon from banana peels is simple and does not require specialised culinary skills. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make this plant-based snack:

Ingredients for the marinade:

  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce,
  • 1 tablespoon of maple syrup,
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil,
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika,
  • a pinch of garlic powder.

Preparation method:

  1. After eating the bananas, thoroughly wash the peels under running water to remove dirt and pesticide residues.
  2. Divide the peels into 3 or 4 strips. Use a spoon to scrape off the inner white part to achieve a smooth texture.
  3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a deep bowl. Add the peels and coat them thoroughly. For best results, leave them in the marinade for 10 to 15 minutes, although longer marinating, even for a few hours, will result in a deeper flavour.
  4. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, arrange the peels and fry for a few minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Remember, the sugar in the marinade can cause smoke, so it's worth turning on the vent.
  5. After frying, transfer the peels to a paper towel to drain the excess oil.

The ready banana peel bacon can be served immediately as an addition to your favourite dishes or as a standalone snack.

Banana peels can also be prepared in an oven by placing them on baking paper and baking at 180°C for about 10 to 15 minutes. This way, the bacon will be even less greasy yet just as tasty.
