An eye-witness relaying their account to the publication "Nation Africa" said there were "multiple explosions" to start with. They added, "Subsequently, expansive fireballs surfaced. People were screaming and scattering in every direction in fear of additional explosions. There was a power outage. People were fleeing their residences," the witness depicted the scene.

The fire rapidly spread to the buildings in close proximity. Videos posted online captured the explosion's moment and the panic that followed the fire incident.

The government's spokesperson, Isaac Mwuara, stated that the fire erupted during the process of filling a propane bottle, adding "The building housing the enterprise was entirely decimated"

The exact count of victims and injured remains uncertain. The Kenyan Red Cross reported that approximately 100 residential buildings took damage. Several ambulances, fire department units and personnel from the national police assembled at the site.
