Fani Willis initiated the investigation into Trump's case, and in August 2023, a jury in Georgia decided to charge Donald Trump and 18 of his associates. Among the accused are the former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, and Mark Meadows, the former White House Chief of Staff.
A grand jury indicted them on 41 charges, including document forgery, impersonating public officials, and influencing witnesses. Four of the accused have pleaded guilty after reaching an agreement with prosecutors, but Trump and the remaining accused have opted for a trial.
The trial is at a standstill
In February 2024, lawyers for one of the co-defendants, former Trump campaign advisor Mike Roman, raised concerns that district attorney Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade had formed a romantic relationship, from which the prosecutor gained material benefits through Wade's employment. They demanded the exclusion of both prosecutors from the case.
Wade voluntarily withdrew, but the trial itself is at a standstill.
In the U.S., not only are the presidential elections underway, but residents of all 50 states are electing their congress members, 34 states are choosing senators, and 11 states are electing governors. In some states, district attorneys are also being elected. In 10 states, referendums will be held on guaranteeing the right to abortion and in five on the legalisation of recreational marijuana and psychedelics.
