Exploring a healthier alternative to wheat with spelt flour

Wheat flour is fundamental to baking and used for making bread, and many dishes are incomplete without it. We frequently use it as a thickening agent for sauces, too. However, one significant drawback it has is that it hardly contains any nutritional properties. For this reason, it is worthwhile to start incorporating substitutes into your diet that can at least partially replace it.

The unhealthy side of wheat flour

Wheat flour is high in calories and whilst in the refining process, it is stripped of nutrients. It also contains little fiber, protein, and healthy fat. Consequently, it can lead to health problems or even weight gain.

So far, substitutes for wheat flour have been associated with people who suffer from gluten intolerance. However, more and more people are diversifying their diets

Spelt flour: A healthier alternative to wheat flour

Spelt flour serves as an excellent alternative to wheat flour. It aids in stabilizing blood sugar levels, which may contribute towards weight loss. Spelt, a grain known for centuries, is rich in nutrients. It is high in carbohydrates and is an exceptional source of dietary fiber.

Spelt flour contains more protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals than wheat flour. Furthermore, it has a lower glycemic index meaning that it does not cause abrupt fluctuations in blood sugar levels. It has a higher antioxidant content than wheat flour, which aids in combating free radicals and shielding the body against diseases. It bears a slightly nutty flavor that adds a unique character to dishes.

A higher fibre intake is healthier

Spelt flour contains more fibre than wheat flour. Fibre slows down digestion and sugar absorption, which contributes to stabilizing blood sugar levels. A high intake of fibre is linked with a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.

The fibre in spelt facilitates bowel function and digestion. Spelt also contains prebiotics, which stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. The lasting feeling of satiety, enhanced bowel function, and copious nutrients make spelt a fantastic substitute for wheat flour.
