European leaders vow to bolster transatlantic ties with US
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated at the summit in Brussels on Thursday that European leaders agreed that Europe needs the strongest possible transatlantic ties with the new American administration. He confirmed that the conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky concerned security guarantees.
European countries are united, with a few minor exceptions, in their readiness to strengthen support for Ukraine. We all feel, and it was clear to everyone, that it is worth supporting Ukraine before the change of power in the United States, before any possible negotiations, Tusk told reporters.
- Everyone is saying the same thing; I have this feeling in Poland that people are becoming increasingly weary of the war. Imagine how exhausted the Ukrainians must be because it's somewhat unfair to say that we are tired," he said.
- However, it is a fact, and that's why we must do everything to ensure that this war ends as quickly as possible, but not as a defeat for Ukraine. Of those 27 leaders, 25 or 24 understand this very well - he emphasised.
Security guarantees
As the Prime Minister added, the leaders discussed peace guarantees during the conversation with Zelensky. However, as Tusk emphasised, it is not about sending troops because "for now, no one is seriously talking about that."
The real topic of the conversation was how Ukraine would like to define security guarantees, what they should consist of - he said.
- At the table, virtually everyone agreed on one thing: Europe needs the strongest possible transatlantic ties with the new American administration.
