The unexplained death in a Russian penal colony

On February 16th, Russian prison authorities announced that Alexei Navalny, imprisoned for three years, had died in a penal colony beyond the Arctic Circle. Navalny was 47 years old at the time of his death.

The statement from the Russian services mentioned that Navalny became unwell after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness. "The penal institution's medical staff arrived at the scene immediately, and emergency services were called. Despite all necessary resuscitation efforts, they were unsuccessful," the statement read.

Navalny, whose death in the camp remains unexplained, was serving a 19-year prison sentence, with the possibility of facing up to 30 years. His death was mourned by thousands.
