Emergency contraception soars after Trump victory concerns
After Donald Trump's victory, sales of emergency contraceptives increased sharply, according to CBS. The online pharmacy Wisp reported a tenfold increase in sales of the "morning-after" pill. "Americans have reasons to fear further restrictions on freedom," said Danika Severino Wynn, an activist from Planned Parenthood, a non-profit organisation.
Another online pharmacy, Winx Health, stated that in the first 60 hours after the election, sales of the Restart pill increased by over 990 per cent compared to the previous week. Wisp noted a tenfold increase in emergency contraception sales on 5th and 6th November, the day of the election and the day after, particularly in Texas, Alabama, and Indiana.
It doesn't surprise us that women are stocking up on these medications, taking healthcare into their own hands - said the company's CEO, Monica Cepak, to the portal.
Planned Parenthood, a non-profit organisation providing sexual and reproductive health services, reported that on 6th November, the number of IUD placement visits increased by 760 percent, and visits for contraceptive implant insertions rose by 350 percent. The most substantial increase was among those seeking vasectomies, with their numbers increasing twelvefold.
"Americans have reasons to be afraid"
- Americans have reasons to fear further restrictions on freedom and loss of control over their bodies. They woke up on 6th November and ran to Planned Parenthood for help, said the organisation's vice-president, Danika Severino Wynn.
As Cepak emphasised, similar behaviour was observed after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling - establishing a federal right of women in the USA to abortion - and also in 2016 after Trump won his first presidential election.
