According to Italian media, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Naples region. This is the strongest earthquake the area has experienced in 40 years.

The tremors were felt across many towns in the Campania region of southern Italy, including Naples. Authorities reported a seismic swarm—a series of earthquakes over a short period—occurring in Campi Flegrei, the caldera of a supervolcano, centered on the city of Pozzuoli.

The first significant tremor occurred in Naples at 18:51 GMT, registering a magnitude of 3.5. This tremor initiated a series of ongoing earthquakes, as reported by the Ansa agency.

The strongest tremor reached a magnitude of 4.4.

This is the strongest earthquake in 40 years, reported "Il Messaggero".

Earthquake in Italy. People took to the streets

Journalists reported that some residents left their homes in panic and took to the streets.

The ground shook strongly in Naples, where people sought refuge wherever they could. When the first tremors were felt at around 18:50 GMT, people were gripped with great fear, informed the portal liberoquotidiano.it.

The Ansa agency reported that the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy indicated the earthquake had a depth of about 2 miles.

The fire brigade is receiving reports of wall cracks in buildings and fallen cornices. So far, there have been no reports of serious damage or injuries.

The authorities of Pozzuoli decided to close schools in the region on Tuesday until building inspections are carried out.
