Earthquake of 4.5 magnitude shakes Euboea; no reports of damages

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 was recorded on Monday before 21:00 GMT in Greece. Its epicentre was located near the island of Euboea, east of Athens. The tremor was also felt in the country's capital.

According to the US Geological Services (USGS), the tremor occurred at a depth of 6 miles, and its epicentre was located 11 miles east of the town of Istiaia in the north of Euboea.

There is no information on damage or casualties.

Greece lies on major geological faults, and earthquakes are frequent here. Although their epicentres are mainly located at sea, there are usually no fatalities.

In 1999, 143 people died in an earthquake magnitude of 5.9 in Athens and the surrounding area.
