Dutch tourist deported for unpaid hotel breakfast in Bali

A 35-year-old Dutch woman took her scheming a step too far when she decided to have breakfast at a hotel dining area without any intention of paying for it. She impersonated a hotel guest to avoid the expense.

The tourist from the Netherlands had rented a room in Bali, where she was engaging in yoga. Recently, her financial situation had significantly deteriorated, and she claims she had no money for food.

In the Netherlands, she is registered as unemployed and receives benefits due to health issues. Every month, the Dutch government provides her with €1,400 (£1,100). However, she found herself short of funds and decided to stealthily partake in breakfast at a five-star hotel without paying.

The hotel staff noticed her attempt at a free meal. The manager sought a resolution without involving the police, but she could not pay the bill. Consequently, the authorities were contacted, and the Dutch woman was taken to the immigration centre.

After more than three weeks, she was deported. During that time, she was added to Bali's blacklist of tourists, which means she won't be able to return to the island.

- We are striving to maintain safety and order and ensure that the deportation process follows the necessary procedures. We urge all foreigners living in Indonesia to always abide by local laws and regulations to avoid any legal issues - said the head of the Denpasar Immigration Detention Centre in Bali during a media briefing.
