Just before the Eurovision final, news broke about the disqualification of the Dutch representative from this year's competition, allegedly due to an act of violence against an individual at the venue.
The Swedish police launched an investigation into the artist Joost Klein. However, until now, details were scarce, leaving Eurovision fans eager for answers. Finally, some light has been shed on the situation.
Dutch broadcaster sheds light on Joost Klein's disqualification
Eurovision enthusiasts have been clamouring for details regarding the off-stage drama. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU)'s silence only spurred further speculation that Joost Klein was accused of assaulting a female staff member at the event. Now, AVROTROS has come forward with their side of the story.
"After Thursday's performance, an unpleasant incident occurred. Contrary to prior agreements, Joost was filmed as he hastily exited the stage to head to the green room. Joost firmly expressed his wish not to be filmed, which was ignored, leading him to make a threatening gesture towards the camera. However, Joost did not physically contact the camera operator. This incident was promptly reported, prompting an investigation by the EBU and police," AVROTROS explains.
In the aftermath, Dutch television engaged in discussions with the EBU regarding Joost Klein's potential continuation in the competition.
In the past two days, we've discussed thoroughly with the EBU and suggested multiple resolutions. Despite our efforts, the EBU decided to uphold Joost Klein's disqualification. AVROTROS views this decision as excessively harsh and disproportional. While we stand for respect and professionalism, we believe the response to the incident was not justified by the actions taken,. The disappointment among fans who were excited for tonight's event is shared by us. Joost's contribution to the Netherlands and Europe's music scene shouldn't conclude in such a manner.
