Bruises are frequently dismissed. They typically appear after a bump, and that's the usual association. However, although rarely, they can indicate serious diseases such as blood cancer, especially when they don't result from an impact. A doctor has issued this warning.
Doctor warns about bruises
Dr Karan Rajan, a surgeon, posted a video on his TikTok profile featuring one of his patients. A young woman visited his clinic because she felt small lumps on her neck. After conducting tests, it was revealed she had blood cancer.
In his recording, Dr Karan emphasised that lumps are just one of many symptoms of cancer. Others can include bruises, which are often ignored, fatigue, swelling of lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, and night sweats.
When should we be concerned about bruises?
When should you consult a doctor about a bruise or bruises? According to Dr Karan Rajan, this should be done if bruises and at least one of the abovementioned symptoms appear. However, he added that only a tiny percentage of people are diagnosed with something serious.
According to guidelines published by the Oxford Urgent Clinic, a clinic in Mississippi in the United States, we should see a doctor for bruises when:
- they appear without an apparent reason,
- they do not decrease or disappear within two to four weeks,
- they feel different from previous bruises,
- they are painful and swollen,
- we suspect a broken bone,
- they are near the eye and are associated with deteriorating vision or difficulty moving the eye.
