The Democratic Party is amid a convention that aims to be a strong push before the November presidential elections. Many authorities support Kamala Harris's candidacy. On the second day of the event in Chicago, former presidential couple Michelle and Barack Obama appeared, and on Wednesday, former U.S. President Bill Clinton was present.
Among those who took the stage during this extraordinary mobilization effort aimed at stopping Donald Trump, Harris's opponent in the White House race, the popular American TV host and producer Oprah Winfrey also unexpectedly appeared. Her participation was kept secret.
US elections. The Democrats' convention could change a lot
- So I’m calling on all you independents and all you undecideds. You know I’m telling you the truth that values and character matter, most of all, in leadership and in life, and more than anything — you know, this is true — that decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024 - said Oprah Winfrey.
The host also discussed the USA's history. She mentioned how great an achievement it is that in a country where racial segregation once prevailed, an African American woman of Indian-Jamaican descent now has a tremendous chance at the presidency.
- I think what she means for women of the world is so extraordinary. For women here in the United States, we can’t even measure it. Because to see someone who looks like you in this role, you see what’s possible for yourself - she declared previously to the People magazine.
Oprah Winfrey also humorously referred to a statement by J.D. Vance, the candidate for Vice President in a potential Donald Trump administration. He caused a stir when he called Kamala Harris a "childless cat lady."
- When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion. We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No, we just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady — well, we try to get that cat out too - said Oprah Winfrey.
