The proposal to introduce separate metro carriages for women in Berlin has emerged due to a sexual violence incident that occurred this year in the metro. Antje Kapek from the Green Party suggests that such a solution, modelled on Tokyo, could provide women with a safe space during peak hours.
However, the Berlin transport company BVG has not enthusiastically supported this idea. The company emphasises that the current safety measures, including round-the-clock security and alarm systems, are adequate to ensure passenger safety.
BVG employs approximately 250 security staff on duty around the clock. The main stations are monitored both during the day and at night, aiming to offer passengers a sense of security. The idea proposed by the Greens remains in the discussion phase without a formal legislative proposal.
Gendered violence in the metro
The incident occurred on 9th February on Berlin's U3 line metro. However, only now has the German police decided to release the image and description of the suspect involved in the sexual assault.
According to preliminary findings, around midnight, one of the metro passengers was attacked by an unknown perpetrator. Due to the nature of the case and the victim's welfare, the police are not providing any further details about the crime's circumstances or the woman's age or identity.
