Power is not reaching Bosnia, Herzegovina, Albania, Croatia, Greece, and parts of Montenegro.
According to avaz.ba, the failure occurred at around 10:25 AM Greenwich Time, at the worst possible moment with it being 40 degrees Celsius outside.
The independent operator of Bosnia and Herzegovina's electric power system announced that the preliminary cause was problems with the transmission line and the overloading of key 400 kV connecting lines.
The direct consequence of this was the cascading transmission of disturbances. A similar scenario occurred on 20 June 2024, when there was a problem in Greece, North Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro. At that time, the quick intervention of the operational personnel and the localisation of the problem at the border with Montenegro prevented the spread of the power system collapse in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Considering that the disturbances spread to Croatia, with Bosnia and Herzegovina having the largest number of connected transmission lines, it was not possible to prevent the collapse of the electrical power system. The entire region is currently affected by cascading power outages: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, and parts of Serbia.
According to local media reports, chaos has erupted in many cities. Traffic lights are not working, public transportation has reached a standstill, and the water supply has been interrupted. Crossing pedestrian crossings in Sarajevo is almost impossible, and people risk their lives.
Efforts are underway to restore power. According to the service report, electricity is already reaching some districts and regions.
