Chinese ZTQ‑15 tanks fortified with anti-drone defences
Russia and Ukraine are not the only countries equipping their tanks with additional protection against drones. In footage published by the Chinese state television CCTV, ZTQ-15 light tanks can be seen fitted with anti-drone cages, protecting both the hull and turret of the vehicle.

The war between Russia and Ukraine serves as a significant test for various military equipment. Observers are drawing clear conclusions from the ongoing battles as solutions such as anti-drone cages and mesh screens gain popularity. Recently, these defensive measures have been installed on Chinese ZTQ-15 light tanks. Such solutions aim to protect against strikes from armed drones, which present a formidable challenge on the battlefield.
Chinese ZTQ-15 tanks
The Chinese Type 15 tank, also known as the ZTQ-15, is a light tank developed by China to meet the modern combat requirements of challenging terrains, like the high-altitude regions of Tibet or jungle environments. Designed for flexibility and mobility, it operates effectively in areas where standard main battle tanks (MBTs), such as the Type 99 or Type 96, may struggle to manoeuvre due to their weight and technical limitations.
The Type 15 is remarkable for its relatively low weight compared to traditional main battle tanks—it weighs about 36 tonnes in its base version, and with additional armour, it can reach up to 40 tonnes. This is a significant difference compared to heavy tanks, which often exceed 55 tonnes. Thanks to its lighter construction, the tank is exceptionally mobile. Additionally, it is powered by a diesel engine with 1,000 horsepower, providing a favourable power-to-weight ratio and enabling speeds of up to roughly 70 kilometres per hour on paved roads.
The Chinese Type 15/ZTQ-15 tanks use composite armour, which can be further fortified with modular armour systems or mesh screens, as seen in the CCTV footage. This vehicle also has an active protection system that can detect and neutralise threats such as incoming anti-tank missiles.
The primary weapon of this tank is a 105 mm smoothbore cannon, capable of firing both anti-tank and high-explosive rounds. It can also launch guided missiles, significantly enhancing its effectiveness over longer distances.
