I have always held dumplings in the highest regard. Until recently, I couldn’t imagine altering the original recipe – the one my grandmother used and, before her, her mother. However, as the saying goes, only a fool never changes their mind. Today, I can confirm the truth of this saying, and it’s all thanks to the recipe I want to share with you.
What to use instead of potatoes for dumplings?
Carrot dumplings – our star for today – are an excellent example of how even the most traditional dishes can be adapted. Is it about "improving" the classic recipe? Oh no, I wouldn’t dare make such grand statements. But I must admit that carrot dumplings are a delightful variation, a refreshing change in the kitchen, and a great way to get kids interested in dinner. In short, they are original, charming, incredibly aesthetic, and, most importantly, delicious. Plus, you can prepare them in just a short time.
Below, I present the recipe for carrot dumplings that I used and can recommend without hesitation. The preparation is exceptionally simple, and seeing kids eagerly devour the beautiful orange dumplings is priceless!
Carrot Dumplings
Ingredients:
- 500 grams of carrots,
- 1 cup of plain flour,
- 1 tablespoon of potato starch,
- salt,
- pepper.
Breading:
- 2 tablespoons of butter,
- 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs.
Preparation Method:
- Peel, wash and cut the carrots into smaller pieces. Transfer them to a pot and cover with cold water. Add a teaspoon of salt and cook the vegetables until soft. Then drain and let cool.
- To make the dough for the carrot dumplings, first press the cooked vegetables through a ricer and then mix them with both types of flour.
- Season with salt and pepper (I use pepper sparingly, as the primary "beneficiaries" of this creative recipe are intended to be children), then knead everything into a malleable dough.
- Shape the dough into a roll and cut it diagonally into diamond shapes. Cook in salted water for 5 minutes (the time is counted from when the dumplings float to the surface).
- Serve with the breading made of butter and breadcrumbs. Delicious!
