Joe Biden, who surprisingly announced that he is withdrawing from the race for a second term as President of the United States, must "immediately" resign, declared Republican leader and Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, on Sunday.

"If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough," Johnson wrote on the platform X.

Joe Biden announced on Sunday on X that he is withdrawing from the race for the presidency of the USA. He announced an address to the nation in which he justified his decision and declared that he would fulfil his duties until the end of the term.

For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me," he wrote.

"I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can't do - when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America," summarised the current president.
