Harris noted in her statement that she is "honoured to have the president's support" and now intends to earn the Democratic Party's nomination.

"We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win," reads Harris's statement, which appeared on the campaign website, not via the White House.

"My intention is to earn and win this nomination. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump," Harris emphasised.

After announcing his decision not to seek a second term, President Joe Biden stated on Sunday at 05:00 GMT that he supports Vice President Kamala Harris's candidacy in the November elections.

Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison announced that in the coming days, the party will undertake a transparent and disciplined process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November.
