Belgian potato industry wilts under climate pressures
The Belgian potato market is facing serious challenges. Unfavourable weather conditions have been one of the primary issues affecting the crops, and intensive potato production in Belgium is becoming increasingly uncertain.
According to the Boeren Bond portal, Belgium is the largest exporter of frozen potato products in the world. In 2023, Belgian producers processed over 5.9 million tonnes of potatoes.
The export of finished products amounted to 3.4 million tonnes. Despite successes in the sector, Belgian farmers and processors are grappling with numerous difficulties.
Crisis in the Belgian potato market
Among the most serious problems Belgian producers face, the portal highlights limited access to high-quality seed potatoes, decreasing availability of plant protection products, and rising storage costs. These factors significantly hinder efficient production. A particular challenge in recent years has been adverse weather conditions.
Worst yields in five years
Intense rainfall in the spring delayed planting until June, shortening the growing season. Although rains in October and November could have improved the situation, for many growers the season ended prematurely. Farmers opted for earlier harvesting, which resulted in lower yields.
According to the Viaverda Institute data, in 2024 the area of potato cultivation in Belgium increased by 5.8 per cent, amounting to approximately 247,100 acres. However, despite the larger area, yields fell. The average yield was 17.3 tonnes per acre, which is 7 per cent less than in 2023. This is also the worst result in five years.
